IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE DECREASE
IN LOIT CREDIT ON PROPERTY TAXES
By the Grant County Auditor (edited)

"Many taxpayers are asking why the LOIT credit for property taxes has decreased for the 2013 payable 2014 tax year. The following is an explanation of how this came about:

Back in 2011, the State of Indiana issued its numbers on how much in Local Option Income Taxes (LOIT) had been withheld from Grant County wage earners, and submitted to the Indiana Department of Revenue, by employers during 2010. Those numbers represented what Grant County would expect to receive from the state in LOIT tax income during 2012, since 2011 was already underway. Any LOIT income which is received by Grant County is then used to reduce property taxes which are payable in that year.

On April 5, 2012, Indiana budget officials announced that they had shorted Indiana counties by $205 million dollars in LOIT funds. On April 9, 2012, Grant County received $1.5 million dollars as its portion of the mishandled funds, but the 2011 payable 2012 property tax statements had already been calculated and were in production when the funds arrived, so the property tax statements were understated in the amount of LOIT credit which was on them.

That credit shortage was then added onto the normal LOIT credit for the 2012 payable 2013 property tax year, which served to reduce property taxes for just that one year. Now, for the property tax year 2013 payable 2014, the credit is again back to normal and property taxes are back to where they should be, albeit higher than the year before.
